The top 10 best paid players still in the Champions League

Ahead of some fascinating Champions League second legs this week, respected French magazine France Football have detailed the top 10 best paid players still in the Champions League.

The list is heavily dominated by Barcelona and PSG.

It is (at the time of writing) very possible that Barcelona and PSG could exit the Champions League this week, with their ties, against Atletico Madrid and Manchester City, very evenly poised.

Below is the list from France Football, with their basic information for what each player has earned this season.

It is followed by a video, pulled from the same France Football content, of the best paid footballers in the world…

1. Leo Messi. Total: €74 million
Annual salary: €36 million
Bonuses: €3 million
Other income: €35 million

Messi is the first footballer ever to exceed 70 million euros in a year, according to France Football. In the past three years, Messi’s annual income has doubled. His off-the field activities mean Messi earns as much from the likes of EA Sports and Gatorade) as from Barcelona.

2. Cristiano Ronaldo. Total: €67.4 million
Annual salary: €32 million
Bonuses: €400,000
Other income: €35 million

Ronaldo continues to expand his of-the-field activities, particularly through social media where he is the most followed athlete across all networks. But, the Real Madrid attacker remains behind his great rival Leo Messi.

3. Neymar. Total: €43.5 million
Annual salary: €20 million
Bonuses: €2.5 million
Other income: €21 million

Neymar’s deal with Barcelona was revealed on Football Leaks on Monday and it looks like his annual salary according to France Football may be a little high. Nevertheless, the Brazilian is expected to earn plenty more next year, either with a new deal at Barcelona, or by signing for PSG or even Real Madrid.

4. Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Total: €28.5 million
Annual salary: €20 million
Bonuses: €2.5 million
Other income: €6 million

Set to be a free agent in the summer, France Football report that Zlatan’s salary dropped by a quarter in his final year at PSG. This will likely be made up with a big move in the summer, with his next club (Manchester United?) not having to pay a transfer fee.

5. Thiago Silva. Total:€26.5 million
Annual salary: €23 million
Bonuses: €1 million
Other income: €2.5m

Despite not being in the Brazil national team squad any longer, Silva still looks set to earn well in 2016. Being the Champions League ambassador for Nissan helps…

6. Angel Di Maria. Total: €26 million
Annual salary: €24 million (€ million per month)
Bonuses: 800 000
Other income: € 1.2m

It is not too difficult to see why Di Maria was so keen to leave Manchester United for PSG, both on and off the field!

7. Gareth Bale. Total: €24.5 million
Annual salary: €14 million
Bonuses: €500 000
Other income: €10 million

Bale looks set to benefit from the headline player on the next game from Konami, a Pro Evolution Soccer 2016 European Championships special.

8. Thomas Muller. Total: €23.6 million
Annual salary: €16 million
Rewards: €600 000
Other income: €7 million

Muller is now the highest paid player at Bayern Munich and his new deal doubled his previous salary.

9. Andrés Iniesta. Total: €21.5 million
Annual salary: €15 million
Bonuses: €2 million
Other income: €4.5m

Were Manchester United still in the Champions League, Wayne Rooney would sit in 9th position…

10. Luis Suarez. Total: €20.3 million
Annual salary: €15 million
Bonuses: €2.5 million
Other income: €2.8m

Luis Suarez has benefited, bonus wise, from Barcelona’s treble. In terms of Europe’s top earners, Iker Casillas would appear in this position were Porto still in the Champions League.

How to watch Manchester City-PSG in Champions League on TV, stream

History will be made on Tuesday. Manchester City could make it to its first Champions League semifinals ever, while PSG is hoping to return for the first time since 1994-95. At the Etihad in Manchester, the two will battle in their quarterfinal second leg with their competition lives on the line, as well as the hopes and dreams of their fans. Here is how to watch and what to know.

Time: 2:45 pm ET

TV: Fox Sports 1 (The match can be streamed on Fox Sports Go).

What's at stake: A spot in the semifinals of the world's most important club competition.

How it stands: The score after the first leg is 2-2, with City holding the advantage with the two away goals.

What to watch for Manchester City: The team's composure. It has never been to this point, and boosted by the return of Yaya Toure, the fire power is there to send the Citizens to the semifinals. But can they remain calm on the ball and stick to their game plan of building patiently in attack?

What to watch for PSG: Zlatan Ibrahimovic, as always. Nobody wants it more, and it is likely that nobody will work harder. The big Swedish star has never won the Champions League, and this may be his best and last chance. Can he score a goal or two to send PSG through?

City will win if... It can remain compact at the back and create enough good chances for Sergio Aguero. The real question is defensively where City has been inconsistent all year long. Whatever central defensive pairing starts, it must be in top form or PSG will likely advance.

PSG will win if... It can get its wingers diagonally behind the outside defenders. If Angel Di Maria and Lucas can swing behind the back to feed Ibrahimovic into the box enough times, this one is over.

When and where is the match being played?

The second leg of the European Cup quarter-final between Manchester City and Paris St-Germain will take place on Tuesday night, with kick off being at the traditional time of 7.45pm for a Champions League tie.

The game will be played at City's Etihad Stadium.

What television channel can I follow the action on?

The appropriately titled BT Sport Europe will broadcast all of the match, with the build-up from Gary Lineker and his mates starting at 7pm. If you don't have a subscription to BT Sport, though,  you can get all the team news, follow every kick and get all the reaction right here. Just bookmark this page and come back at around 6.30pm on Tuesday evening for regular updates in our live blog.

Alternatively you could, you know, go to the match - on Monday afternoon the club still had around 1,500 tickets still available.

What is the team news?

Vincent Kompany, the City captain, has been ruled out of the tie. The Belgium defender, out for the past month with a calf problem, has been involved in training but Tuesday's game has come around too soon.

Playmaker David Silva (ankle) is fit to return after being rested at the weekend while defender Nicolas Otamendi should overcome a twisted ankle. Raheem Sterling (groin) remains on the sidelines and fellow forward Samir Nasri is ineligible.
Marco Verratti was included in Paris Saint-Germain's squad on Monday. Italian playmaker Verratti is a key component of Laurent Blanc's side but has been troubled by a groin problem and has not played since February 20.

After last Wednesday's first leg, which ended in a 2-2 draw at the Parc des Princes, Blanc said there was no chance Verratti or Javier Pastore would be fit for the return in England.

However, Blanc later suggested that he was hopeful Verratti could make a miracle recovery in time to feature.

Pastore, who has been troubled by a calf problem, was also included by Blanc, who kept his options open by naming 22 players in his squad for the trip.

PSG will be without David Luiz and Blaise Matuidi, who are both suspended after being booked in the first leg.

Probable line-ups

Manchester City (4-2-3-1): Hart; Sagna, Otamendi, Mangala, Clichy; Fernando, Fernandinho; De Bruyne, Toure, Silva; Aguero.
Paris St-Germain (4-3-3): Trapp; Aurier, Silva, Marquinhos, Maxwell; Rabiot, Motta, Verratti; Di Maria, Ibrahimovic, Cavani.
Referee: Carlos Velasco Carballo (Spain).

What are the managers saying?

"I think the most important aspect of this team is always to score. We are working here for three years and I always have the same answer.

"We are a team that is prepared to score goals. If we prepare to play 0-0 I think we lose. You see the same team you see the last two and a half seasons.

"We must play every game thinking that we are the best that we can win - to arrive to the semi-final to try and win this competition." Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini.

"It's true that we've reached the quarter-finals three times. I understand the immense expectation, but if we reach the semi-finals, there will be expectation for the final.

"And it won't stop until the day Paris Saint-Germain win the European Cup. That's a certainty, with or without me.
Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini

"As long as PSG haven't won the European Cup, there will be an expectation and everyone will be under pressure - last 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, final.

"You have to win the final because the project of the club is to win the European Cup. But we also have to show progress and tomorrow we have a chance to confirm that progress." Paris St-German manager Laurent Blanc.

Koulibaly stays for Champions League

Kalidou Koulibaly’s agent says his client will stay at Napoli as long as they finish at least second.

The Partenopei are currently six points behind leaders Juventus, but have a four-point cushion over Roma in third.

“It’ll be an important game with Inter,” Bruno Satin said on Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli ahead of this weekend’s trip to San Siro.

“Roma’s draw was important, and now it’s important to get a successful outcome in Milan.

“He’s thinking a lot about direct qualification for the Champions League, the lad is improving day-by-day and learning from his teammates who have played at very high levels. We hope to secure it soon.

“If Napoli go straight into the Champions League they’ll definitely keep him, with European money Napoli won’t need to sell anyone and will have the chance to bring some players in.

“He understands the city and the city understands him, he’s always been received with great affection, like after the racist chanting against Lazio.

“England? We’re not waiting for anything, some Premier League teams have access to big money this year, they might to crazy things, but there’s nothing specific for Kalidou.”

UEFA Champions League: Real Madrid seek redemption for first-leg Wolfsburg humiliation

Real Madrid are determined to create an intimidating atmosphere for visitors VfL Wolfsburg as they try to overturn a two-goal deficit in Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.

"Tuesday will be like a war, with 80,000 spectators; we are going to try and walk all over Wolfsburg," said defender Dani Carvajal.

Real Madrid seek redemption for first-leg Wolfsburg humiliation

"We're going to play to the death and with 80,000 souls behind us we will do it," added winger Lucas Vazquez

Forward Cristiano Ronaldo told the club website (www.realmadrid.com): "We need to have cold hearts and play with patience and know how to suffer. Getting through is our big objective, it's the only thing that will let the players and fans leave the stadium happy."

Madrid are third in La Liga and enjoyed a 4-0 win over Eibar on Saturday to close the gap with leaders Barcelona to four points, lifting their confidence after the shock 2-0 defeat at Wolfsburg last Wednesday.

The German side are eighth in the Bundesliga and were held 1-1 by Mainz on Saturday. Coach Dieter Hecking made four changes from the team that beat Madrid and was without Julian Draxler, the outstanding player last week, through suspension.

Real, 10-times European champions, have a history littered with great comebacks at the Bernabeu, beginning with a 5-1 win over Derby County in the 1975 European Cup after they had lost 4-1 in England.

Madrid beat Inter Milan 3-0 to reach the final of the 1985 UEFA Cup after losing the semi-final first leg 2-0, when midfielder Juanito famously warned Inter: "Ninety minutes in the Bernabeu is a very long time".

Madrid also staged successful second-leg comebacks against Celtic, Anderlecht, Red Star Belgrade and Borussia Moenchengladbach but their reputation as miracle workers is waning and they last overturned a deficit in

2002 when they beat Bayern Munich 2-0 at the Bernabeu in a quarter-final second leg on their way to winning the trophy.

Since then, Madrid have lost eight first-leg games in the Champions League knockout stages and failed to progress every time, exiting last season's tournament to Juventus 3-2 on aggregate and managing only a 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in the 2013 semi-finals after losing the first leg 4-1.

Yet Madrid's self belief remains strong.

"We're going to turn it around because everyone who comes to the stadium and follows us deserves it, our badge deserves it and we work all year for those big nights," said defender Nacho.

"Real Madrid's history was written on nights like these and I hope we can do it again on Tuesday," added director and former striker Emilio Butragueno, who played in the famous comebacks against Inter, Anderlecht and Gladbach.

Wolfsburg, though, are equally determined. "On Tuesday we'll be at 100 million percent, we're going to run as if our lives depended on it," forward Andre Schurrle told German news agency DPA.

"Since we beat Real Madrid the entire city has been talking about that game and the second leg. It won't be easy."

Madrid striker Karim Benzema and Raphael Varane were injured against Eibar but trained on Sunday and are expected to return to face Wolfsburg.
