Borussia Dortmund clash will give Tottenham vital Champions League preparation, says TalkingTHFC
In his latest blog for Dream Team, Tottenham Hotspur blogger TalkingTHFC argues that the difficult tie of Borussia Dortmund is perfect for Spurs to rediscover the difficulties of the Champions League.
What a week it’s been for the Europa League.
Not only did Spurs overcome Fiorentina so comfortably, but Friday’s draw suddenly meant that all eyes turned to the Champions League‘s little, irritating brother.
Thursday night’s 3-0 victory over the Italian side showed just how far Mauricio Pochettino‘s side have come in a year. Admittedly, Fiorentina have significantly weakened since the two sides met a year ago, but the gracious way that Spurs turned them over was remarkable.
As David Pleat pointed out in his post-match coverage, there was no Dembele, no Vertonghen, and most significantly, no Harry Kane.
But now the White Hart Lane side face a bigger, better beast of a team.
There’s no denying it, Borussia Dortmund are a European heavyweight, and deserve to be playing Champions League football.
Both sides will be in Europe’s elite competition come next season, and what better way to prepare than facing each-other away from the spotlight.
Having been out of the Champions League for some time, Spurs need to experience what it’s like to face sides of this calibre once again.
Should we succeed in finishing in the top four, the group stages next year could be a real shock to the system. Dortmund are the first side we’ve come across in the last 12 months that will be a real test of that level.
I personally was thrilled to see our two sides being drawn from the hat.
There is no other stadium quite like the Westfalenstadion, although there will be if Liverpool have their way.
The ‘Yellow Wall’ is a visual and audible masterpiece. Our travelling support will have their work cut out to top it, although a good rendition of the Sol Campbell chant might do the trick.
A little taste of what is to come could be the perfect kick in the gonads to drive us over the finishing line in the Premier League.
Can we do it?
I sure hope so, because should we overcome arguably the most difficult side left in the Europa League, there’s nothing stopping us from going all the way.
Come March 10th, Spurs will be rubbing shoulders with Europe’s elite once again, and it’s been a long time coming.
